Carbohydrates and conviviality

Valentina de Lorenzis pasta typologies
Pasta shapes developed by Valentina de Lorenzis

What is it about carboydrate-rich food that just screams conviviality? Valentina de Lorenzis, a recent graduate of the Man and Humanity Masters at the Design Academy Eindhoven, chose pasta to investigate this very subject. The result was an array of new pasta typologies, a hand held pastamaker that fits in the palm of your hand and a video starring her grandmother.

Folks that buy their pasta at the supermarket probably don’t realise that in Italy most pasta forms are as distinct as the people that make them. Sometimes only the hands are used to make unusual shapes, or a thin stick to produce shapes that probably at some point inspired food industry macaroni. Even a kitchen tool like a grater can be used to provide some sauce-gripping reliëf. de Lorenzis’ project was not so much about producing a thingy-thingy or new typologies (although she did both of these things), but about the conviviality, community and identity elements of home pasta making. Something for the food trend watchers to chew on…

Erik Hobijn poses with the Mothuh of all mojito makers

At last weekend’s party for the youth of today, artist Erik Hobijn demonstrated the explosive power of his handheld cocktail launcher and created some unexpectedly delicious chunky style mojitos. Officially speaking, this cockbot is more of a cyborg mixer than a robot, and I wouldn’t have liked this boytoy if it was only for show. But the mojito was good, and it was awfully Environmentally Christian of Eric to not skimp on the size. Who likes drinking from a dinky glass? Sure as heq not me.

Is that a cock in your pocket or were you just happy to mix me up a banana daquiri?

Obviously Erik is open to using the Cocktail Pistol for peaceful purposes only, if one can call Happy Hour peaceful.

Alignment at last
Shana Tova and Ramadan Mubarek

May this be a year of double happiness. At sundown last night began both the month of Islamic month of Ramadan and the Jewish New Year. Holidays can do nothing other than coincide from time to time when you’re both sporting lunar calendars. This will be the last time for awhile as Ramadan comes earlier each year. Ramadan is a month of reflection in which daytime restriction induces deep personal reflection. Daylight restraint is celebrated en group when families and entire communities come together each evening to break the fast, the Iftar meal. Fasting ultimately leads to feasting.

Rosh Hashana, although the Jewish New Year, is not a balls out affair, compared to other folks’ New Year celebrations it’s downright demure. Possible cause is that Rosh Hashana kicks off the period calls the Days of Awe, the 10 day period before the chaotic and humanistic day of atonement, Yom Kippur. For Jews this is a period of temperance and reflection in which one is obliged to a.o.t. forgive others, ask forgiveness for one’s own wrongdoings and hopefully to be forgiven.
